Once upon a time in Komárom Hungary i was part of a one time only experimental noise collective called: the cardboard box collective. I build a weird instrument out of old furniture wood and we rehearsed outside. Due to the project being part of a residency program we ended up performing on national television. To this dat i have never seen the fragment, but i’m pretty sure TV’s were turned off/softer/louder in Hungary that day. Great memories in a time when travel was still possible 🌲

One of the things i miss most in this brave new world of Covid-19 is the possibility of working on site with projects. The photo here show’s a small humble setup at an ice rink where i had to compose a piece for the “experiment on ice” project in Leeuwarden and to me that ad hock type of working is hugely inspirational and beneficial to my studio recordings/compositions because i tend to make new and creative choices i probably wouldn’t make in the studio. Sadly i think it will be quite a long time before this type of projects will roll along again, not due to the virus itself but the sheer amount of damage it is doing to the art and music world. Let’s just hope i’m wrong and a little bit to pessimistic.

Playing live with just a minimal looping/guitar set up is one of the things i love to do. Sadly, it will probably take some time before i’ll be able to do these small and intimate gigs again. I do think music has a tremendous potential to take your mind places, so if you’re in quarantine this might be your holiday ticket this year.

Nothing quite beats the charm of vinyl for me. Every once in a while i go through my record collection and look at all the artwork/lyrics and artist notes. For me it’s a medium that demands a certain attention and focus, from putting the needle onto the Vinyl to the physicality of the actual disk and taking the time to relax and really listen to the sounds. What makes my collection extra special to me is that it’s part bought by me, part inheritance and part gifted to me by family members who came across stuf they think i would like. So to me they’re a window into a lot of different worlds.

It’s sometimes easy to forget where you started. This picture was taken in the house where i lived in Leeuwarden around 4 years ago and where i still had to work on my compositions from home. Fast forward 4 years and a lot has happened. I now have my own studio where i can work and once again live in my hometown of Arnhem. Every workplace had it’s own pros and cons, but i’m definitely happy that i grew as an artist and managed to find my own studio place and don’t have to work from my living room anymore. Lets see what the next years will bring! *bonus points to people who manage to find my cat in the picture*.

Old equipment will forever have a special place in my heart, whether it’s old instruments or something else. The equipment seems to grow character and texture over time and therefore becomes much more of an individual force. Of course some projects require the surgical precision of modern gear, but i always try to sneak in some crackle, noise or texture. Anyone else fallen under the spell of old equipment?

Although it’s a bit more quite on my Instagram, i’m actually pretty busy with multiple new projects. It’s interesting that quite a few of these projects touch on concepts i have worked with a couple of years ago. It’s nice to notice my attitude towards certain concepts have not remained still but have changed with me and reveal new insights that were hidden before. It once again showed me the importance of reflexion, inner thought and inner critic.
